Something Went Wrong
The cathedral is always worth a visit. Inside there are several side altars. The Hautpalatar was designed by Gaudi and the lighting represents the crown of thorns of Christ. The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament next to the main altar was designed by Mallorcan artist Miguel Barcelo and depicts the miraculous multiplication of fish and bread.
The sunny region of Calvià has a 54 km coastline, large wooded areas and is protected in the north by the Tramuntana Mountains. Nature lovers will find an impressive backdrop for hiking tours all year round. Variety in the vacation program offers for example the Marineland or the Western Water Park. Besides the beach El Arenal in Palma, the southwest convinces with its numerous beaches, which are located along the extensive coast. Marineland houses a dolphinarium, aquariums, sea lions and seals, as well as a tropical house and bird house. Injured and marine animals are also taken in and cared for at Marineland until they can be released back into the wild. The Marineland is located in the immediate vicinity of the port of Portals Nous.
Further west you will find wild romantic landscapes and the sleepy mountain villages of Alaró, Esporles, Puigpunyent and the highest mountain village of Mallorca - Galilea. From this privileged place you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the Serra de Tramuntana to the bay of Palma.
On the coast, the mountain range merges ruggedly and bizarrely with the sea right at the fashionable harbor town of Port d'Andratx. Further south in the direction of Palma, one encounters the quiet and picturesque dream coast of Costa de la Calma.
Santa Ponsa is a place steeped in history. King Jaume I landed here almost 790 years ago to free the island from the Arabs with his army. This can still be seen today if you know what to look for. At the port of Santa Ponsa is a metal cross. According to history, the first ship landed there. The army then moved inland towards Palma and stopped for the first time at the place where the freeway to Palma runs today and at the level of the Palma Nova exit. Coming from Palma, you can see a small chapel on the right side of the hill. The altar inside is a large stone, which, according to legend, the men of King Jaime used as an altar to thank God for the happy crossing and to ask for assistance. In the past, there was another cross on the road. However, this was moved during the construction of the highway and now stands nearby on the bike path.
As the cathedral in Palma proves, King Jaume I succeeded in freeing the island from the Arabs. The great mosque in Palma was demolished and the foundation walls were used to build La Seu Cathedral.
In recent years, several exclusive beach clubs have been established on the coasts and beaches. The most famous is probably the Nikki Beach Club. The elite public enjoys the noble club atmosphere and the culinary delights since a few years. Those who come with their own yacht are picked up by a shuttle and brought ashore. In some bays the restaurants offer a yacht service and deliver food and drinks "free boat".
In the southwest of the island are also the 2 most noble marinas of the island. Puerto Portals with its boutiques, top restaurants and bars. Enjoy top Mallorcan or international cuisine with a view of super yachts or store in one of the luxurious boutiques.
Yacht brokers and luxury real estate agencies have their offices in the port and offer fancy properties.
Port Adriano was designed by designer Philippe Starck and offers top restaurants, chic boutiques and great bars. Who would like to refresh his sailing or motorboat skills is in the right hands at the driving school Kaden. Here you can also make the boat license according to German standards.
If you have the license then it goes directly to the branch of Sunseeker to look at the latest yachts. Maybe you will find the right ship for your future stays.
At the foot of the Tramuntana mountains lies Andratx and the harbor Port Andratx. The harbor promenade is lined with very good restaurants, bars and small stores. A good place to relax and have a drink while watching the fishermen untangle their nets. Early in the morning you can buy freshly caught fish directly from the ship. Or you can go to the Hotel Villa Italia for breakfast and start the day on the terrace high above the sea. From Port Andratx you can reach the most southwestern tip of the island and the village of San Telmo. Here there is a beautiful pedestrian zone and the cars are driven around the village. One has the possibility to take a fishing boat from the small harbor to the offshore island of Dragonera. Dragonera is a protected biotope and is inhabited only by birds and lizards. The water in front of the island is crystal clear and sometimes 30m deep but you can see all the way to the bottom. Hikers get their money's worth by walking to the island's only building, the lighthouse.
From San Telmo there is also a wonderful circular route to the former Trappist monastery of Sa Trapa. Through student initiatives, some buildings have been rebuilt and the view of the sea and the terraces laid out is fantastic. The hike is demanding and it takes several hours to get back to San Telmo.
