Something Went Wrong
In Port de Pollensa it is worthwhile to stop at one of the numerous restaurants and cafes. At the northernmost point of Mallorca Cap Formentor with its lighthouse from which you can see as far as the island of Menorca it is good to stay even on hot days due to the constant wind. Just the approach over the rocky road is impressive.
If you drive through the Tramuntana mountains, you will be offered magnificent panoramic views again and again. Hikers like to stop in Cala Sant Vincenç and explore the hiking trails through the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range from there.
Pollensa is steeped in history and is one of the oldest settlements in Mallorca. Built by the Romans and made the capital, Pollentia ("The Mighty) was an important port and connection to the rest of the Roman Empire.
But also the Arabs built in the north the city of Al Khudyia ( the Ruler ) and you can find in the Alcudia- Museum many artifacts from excavations. Near Alcudia are the excavation sites where you can see the foundations of the cities as well as the foundations of a Roman amphitheater.
Spared from a tourist infrastructure, Pollença with its noble marina "Port de Pollença" has always been the starting point to the most beautiful bathing bays and hiking destinations of the island. Here you can also charter a yacht or discover the island from the sea.
The small town of Pollença seems, despite clearly Mallorcan features, a bit Tuscan. Perhaps this is due to the interlocking houses, the fine restaurants and the narrow labyrinth of alleys in the romantic old town. In Port de Pollensa, culture lovers will find numerous galleries and museums. There, the climb up the mountain to the Ermita de Puig de Maria, one of the most beautiful monasteries in Mallorca, is also worthwhile.
In Alcudia with its preserved mighty city wall and the small winding streets of the old town is also worth a visit. There are many small stores to explore and you will always find what you are looking for.
Of course, the rugged natural landscape on the way to the northernmost point of the island , the Cap Formentor, should not be forgotten. To contain the traffic a little, the road is closed in the summer and a shuttle service is used to bring people to the lighthouse at Cap Formentor.
Before that, however, you absolutely have to make a detour to the beach at the former luxury Hotel Formentor. Finest sand under shady pine trees gives the view over the bay. Those who later change to the luxurious hotel for a sundowner should be aware that the hotel has already seen quite a few celebrity guests. Even in the year 2000, Sir Peter Ustinov's sailing yacht anchored in front of the hotel, and Sir Peter resided as always in the Hotel Formentor.
The northeast of Mallorca stretches between Cap de Ferrutx and Cap de Formentor across two picturesque bays - the larger Badia d'Alcúdia and the smaller Badia de Pollença. These landscapes characterize the rugged side of the island with the imposing cliffs of the Formentor Peninsula and the Serra de Tramuntana, with small sand and stone beaches and secluded places like Colònia de St. Peré. In addition, large golf courses, such as in Alcanada near Port d'Alcúdia, offer relaxing opportunities for demanding golfers.
Those who want to explore the unspoiled landscape of the sunny island can do so in the S'Albufera nature reserve and on the numerous hiking trails in the extensive northern mountains, where you can also observe wild and protected animal species.
